Eight years ago, I found myself plunged into perimenopause in my mid-forties. It was a time of immense upheaval - I had just moved halfway across the world to Sydney, leaving behind lifelong friends and family, with no support network to lean on. Menopause was still a taboo subject and I felt completely unprepared for what lay ahead.
Looking back now, I see how that challenging time became a pivotal moment - a doorway to rediscovering myself. It was a journey of healing, growth and stepping into a stronger, more authentic version of me.
We don’t need to see menopause as something to fear or endure. Instead, it can be a profound opportunity to reconnect with ourselves, to embrace our inner power and step into life with renewed purpose.
The Four Stages of Menopause
Understanding menopause as a journey, not just a single moment, is key to navigating it with clarity and resilience. This natural transition unfolds through four stages:
Pre-Menopause: The years leading up to hormonal changes when your cycle is regular, and symptoms may not yet appear. This phase sets the foundation for the changes ahead.
Perimenopause: Often called the "critical window", this stage can last several years before menopause. Hormonal fluctuations bring symptoms such as irregular periods, hot flushes, mood changes and more.
Menopause: Officially begins after 12 consecutive months without a period.
Post-Menopause: The years after menopause when symptoms may ease but long-term health considerations such as heart disease, osteoporosis and dementia, including Alzheimer’s, become more significant.
Having awareness of these stages empowers you to prepare, adapt and make choices that nurture your well-being – for body, mind and soul.
Common Experiences During Menopause
Menopause often feels like an emotional and physical rollercoaster. Many women encounter:
Hot flushes and night sweats
Mood swings and heightened anxiety

Weight changes and a slower metabolism
